Pre / Post-Gastroscopy Care In A Nutshell

  • A gastroscopy (or upper-GI endoscopy) is a medical procedure to visualise the inside of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
  • You will be required to fast at least 6 hours before your procedure.
  • Where possible, you will be advised to stop taking any medications that can thin your blood, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for at least a few days before your procedure.
  • It is normal to experience mild discomfort and soreness in the throat or bloating of the stomach following the procedure.
  • Downtime: Minimal – You may resume normal activities after 1-2 days. You will be discharged on the same day following the procedure.
  • A follow-up session will be arranged to explain the results of your investigation.

What Is A Gastroscopy?

A gastroscopy (or upper-GI endoscopy) is a medical procedure where a doctor inserts a long, thin tube with a camera and light attached into a patient’s stomach through their mouth. This procedure allows the doctor to visualise the inside of the upper gastrointestinal tract, which includes the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, meaning the patient is asleep during the process, and the entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes. Gastroscopies are often used to diagnose stomach ulcers, bleeding, and inflammation. It can also be used to biopsy or take a small tissue sample for further testing.

While generally safe, there is a small risk of bleeding, infection, and perforation of the stomach wall during the process, although such occurrences are rare.

Recovery from a gastroscopy is also usually quick, and most patients can go home the same day.

What Conditions Is A Gastroscopy Used To Treat?

A gastroscopy can be used to both diagnose and treat a variety of conditions. The procedure can be used to investigate gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as ulcers and tumours. They may also be used to remove foreign objects from the stomach or take biopsies (tissue samples) for further testing.

In some cases, the procedure may be performed in order to insert a feeding tube or place a stent.

What To Expect Before & After A Gastroscopy With G & L Surgical Clinic

Finally, arriving at the appointment on time and with someone who can drive you home afterwards is important, as sedation will be used during the procedure. By following these simple steps, you can ensure a smooth and successful gastroscopy.

Patients are advised to bring an accompanying adult with them on the day of their procedure, as the sedation will make it unsafe for them to drive.

You should also wear comfortable clothing that is not restrictive or tight-fitting following the completion of the procedure.

Apart from that, you will need to bring your medical and personal verification documents, such as your NRIC, passport or other identification documents, on the day of the procedure.

One of the most important things to do before a gastroscopy is to fast.

Fasting helps to ensure that the stomach is empty, which makes the procedure easier and safer. It also helps to prevent aspiration of food content during the procedure, as you will be asleep during the process.

Patients will be required to abstain from solid food and liquids for at least six hours before their scheduled gastroscopy.

In general, there is no need to stop taking your regular medication before a gastroscopy. However, you will be required to stop taking certain medications that can increase your risk of bleeding or other complications. 

These medications include:

  • blood thinners (such as warfarin or aspirin), 
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and 
  • herbal supplements.

There are a few pre-admission tests that may be required before a gastroscopy. These tests help ensure that the procedure is safe for you and that your doctor can get an accurate diagnosis. 

The most common test is an upper GI series, which uses x-rays to create images of the inside of your gastrointestinal tract. You may also need a blood test to check for anaemia (low levels of red blood cells) or infection. 

In some cases, our doctor may also recommend having an electrocardiogram (EKG) to check your heart function. These tests are typically performed a few days before your scheduled procedure and are only recommended if deemed necessary.

The recovery period after a gastroscopy is usually short. Most patients can go home the same day and return to normal activities within a day or two. 

In some cases, however, there may be some mild discomfort and soreness in the throat or bloating of the stomach. This can usually be relieved with over-the-counter pain medication.

In general, no follow-up procedure is needed after a gastroscopy. 

However, if the gastroscopy was performed to retrieve a biopsy or to remove a polyp, Dr Ganesh may recommend a follow-up session a week after your procedure to review the results of your investigation and recommend if further testing or treatment is required. 

You may also need a follow-up endoscopy if symptoms persist after the initial procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

After a gastroscopy, you can generally resume your normal diet unless your doctor advises otherwise. It’s best to start with light, easily digestible foods and gradually progress to your regular diet based on your comfort level.

Alcohol consumption is generally not recommended immediately after a gastroscopy, especially on the day of the procedure. The sedative medications used during the gastroscopy can interact with alcohol and may increase its effects. Your doctor will provide specific instructions regarding alcohol consumption during the post-gastroscopy recovery period.

It is normal to experience some soreness or discomfort in the stomach area after a gastroscopy. This is typically mild and temporary, improving within a short period. If the discomfort persists, worsens, or is accompanied by severe pain, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, it is important to contact your doctor for further advice.

Bloating can occur after a gastroscopy due to the air introduced during the procedure. This is usually temporary and resolves within a few hours. Drinking warm liquids, gentle movements, and avoiding gas-producing foods can help alleviate bloating. If bloating persists or is accompanied by severe pain or other unusual symptoms, consult your doctor.

It is not uncommon to experience some mild discomfort or pain after eating while recovering from a gastroscopy. This can be due to the irritation of the stomach lining during the procedure. However, if the pain is severe, persistent, worsening, or if you experience other concerning symptoms, it is important to consult your doctor for further evaluation and guidance.
