Pre / Post-Appendix Removal Care In A Nutshell

  • Appendix removal, or appendectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix.
  • You will be required to fast at least 6 hours before your surgery.
  • Where possible, you will be advised to stop taking any medications that can thin your blood, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for at least a few days prior to your treatment.
  • Appendix removal is performed inpatient and will require you to be warded for at least 1-3 days in the hospital for observation.
  • Inform our doctor before the procedure of any medication or supplements you take.
  • Downtime: You may resume normal activities after 2 weeks. You may be discharged 1-3 days after surgery.
  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least four to six weeks to allow the incision to heal properly.

What Is Appendix Removal?

Appendix removal, or appendectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix. The appendix is a small, tube-like organ attached to the large intestine. It is not essential for survival but can become infected and cause serious health problems. 

The procedure is typically performed if the appendix becomes inflamed, causing the appendix to fill with pus. If left untreated, this condition can be fatal, which is why an appendectomy is usually performed as an emergency procedure to prevent the spread of infection.

What Conditions Is Appendix Removal Used To Treat?

Appendix removal is usually recommended when the appendix becomes inflamed and swells (appendicitis). If appendicitis is not treated, the inflamed appendix can burst and leak bacteria into your abdomen. 

This can cause a serious infection called peritonitis, which requires immediate treatment. 

In some cases, an appendectomy may be performed as a preventative measure if you have a family history of appendicitis or are at increased risk for the condition.

What To Expect Before & After Appendix Removal With G & L Surgical Clinic

If you are scheduled for an appendectomy, there are a few things you can do to prepare.

These are the steps you should follow:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours before your scheduled surgery. If your condition is serious, inform our doctor of the last time you drank any liquid or consumed solid food.
  • Stop taking medications that can thin your blood, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before the surgery.
  • You should make sure to wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.

Following these simple tips can help ensure that your appendix removal is safe and successful.

Before you come in for your appendix removal, please be sure to bring the following items with you to the hospital: 

  • A list of your current medications, 
  • Any allergies you have, 
  • A list of your medical conditions, 
  • Your insurance information, and 
  • An extra pair of loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Something to keep you occupied during your stay, such as a book or tablet.

Please also arrange for someone to drive you home after discharge (usually at least 1-3 days following the procedure).

You will need to fast before appendix removal as the surgery requires general anaesthesia. This means you will be asleep and unable to swallow during the surgery. To prevent aspirating (breathing in) stomach contents, you must fast for at least 6 hours before the surgery. This means no solid food or liquids, including water or coffee. 

In an emergency, inform Dr Ganesh of any food or liquid you may have consumed in the past 6 hours before the surgery.

An appendectomy is usually performed as an emergency procedure. However, if patients can plan for their procedure ahead, you may be advised to stop taking certain medications.

If you are taking blood thinners such as warfarin or aspirin, you will need to stop taking these medications a few days before surgery to avoid an increased risk of bleeding during or after the procedure.

 You should also avoid taking herbal supplements or over-the-counter medications that can thin the blood. 

If you are unsure whether or not a medication you are taking falls into this category, please be sure to inform Dr Ganesh prior to your treatment.

An appendectomy is usually performed when the appendix becomes infected or inflamed. This condition is known as appendicitis. In some cases, appendicitis can lead to a ruptured appendix, which can be life-threatening.

You will be required to stay in the hospital for 1 to 3 days after your appendix is removed, and you may be discharged once your vital signs and pain levels have normalised.
